Horror
French
1981 · Directed by Andrzej Żuławski · 124 min
A man returns home to West Berlin to find his wife wants to leave him, and she will not say why. As he searches for an explanation, the film turns a marital breakdown into something feverish, physical and increasingly strange.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 1980s European art-horror strand, and the work in which Żuławski, a Polish director working in exile, pushed expressive, emotional acting and camerawork furthest.
Watch with intention
Read each scene as emotion pushed past realism: the acting and the camera are both trying to show feeling, not to explain events.
