Drama
Spanish (Furtivos)
1975 · Directed by José Luis Borau · 82 min
In a remote, wooded corner of rural Spain, a young poacher lives under the thumb of his formidable mother. When a runaway girl from a reform school crosses his path, the closed world of the household begins to strain. A tense, earthy drama that works as a thriller and as a portrait of power.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late-Franco period, it shows how Spanish filmmakers used rural settings and family drama to speak indirectly about power, repression and desire.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as a struggle over who controls whom, in the home, in the forest and in the village.
