A young American volunteer arrives in Vietnam in 1967 and is assigned to an infantry platoon already divided by exhaustion, rank and temperament. Told through his letters and eyes, the film is a ground-level account of fear, fatigue and moral choice in the jungle.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late-1980s Vietnam cycle, it reset how American cinema pictured the war: not as a hallucination or a wound to be avoided, but as a lived infantry experience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story told through one inexperienced pair of eyes, where what the narrator notices and misjudges matters as much as the action.
