Astronaut Taylor and his crew crash-land in an unknown wilderness where apes talk, govern and hold mute humans as animals to be hunted and studied. Taylor, a sceptic who left Earth disillusioned, must survive, and be heard. An adventure that doubles as a sharp social allegory.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of late-1960s American science fiction, where the genre moved from B-movie monsters to allegory about society, power and belief. It also set the template for the modern franchise.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an allegory in disguise: notice how a strange world keeps echoing human institutions, habits and arguments.
