Drama
Danish (Pelle Erobreren)
1988 · Directed by Bille August · 157 min
Two Swedish emigrants, a widowed farmhand and his young son, arrive on the Danish island of Bornholm in the late nineteenth century, hoping to earn enough to reach America. The film is a patient, richly observed portrait of farm labour, hierarchy and a child's growing awareness of the world.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining Scandinavian literary adaptation of the late 1980s, it shows how the European period drama could blend social realism with painterly imagery and reach a worldwide audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story told from a child's eye level, where the rules of a whole society are learned through daily routine.
