France, 1916. A colonel serves under generals whose ambitions weigh heavily on the men they command. Stanley Kubrick's compact, cold-eyed drama looks at the First World War through chains of command, where the real conflict is inside the army.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the postwar Hollywood anti-war tradition and the work that established Kubrick as a major director, anticipating the institutional satire and critique of Dr. Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of power: notice how rank, space and politeness shape what each man is able to say or do.
