Indian (পথের পাঁচালী)
1955 · Directed by Satyajit Ray · 125 min
In a poor Bengali village in the early twentieth century, a family lives in a crumbling ancestral house. A sharp-tongued old aunt, a stubborn mother, a father who dreams of better work, and two children whose curiosity makes the world feel enormous. The film moves at the pace of daily life.
Why it matters in cinema history
A founding work of Indian art cinema and one of the key postwar films to carry a realist, humanist style beyond Europe, it brought Indian filmmaking to world festivals.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about attention: what the children notice, and how patiently the camera notices it with them.
