2006 · Directed by Guillermo del Toro · 118 min
Spain, 1944. A young girl arrives with her expectant mother at a remote military outpost run by her new stepfather, a ruthless captain. Nearby, an ancient labyrinth and a strange creature offer her an escape. A fairy tale told in the shadow of real violence.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 21st-century art-house fantasy, and a key work in the Spanish-language tradition of using ghosts and fairy tales to speak about the Civil War and Franco's dictatorship.
Watch with intention
Watch the two worlds, the soldiers' and the labyrinth's, as mirrors of each other rather than as reality and escape.
