Six short stories follow the Allied advance up Italy, from Sicily to the Po delta. In each one, American soldiers and ordinary Italians meet briefly, often without a shared language. Rossellini films a war-ravaged country as it actually looked, using real locations and many non-professional performers.
Why it matters in cinema history
One of the defining works of Italian neorealism and a key influence on postwar European cinema, it showed that fiction could be built from real places, chance encounters and fragments instead of a tightly plotted drama.
