In 1913 a Danish woman travels to British East Africa to marry a baron and start a new life. On the farm she builds beneath the Ngong Hills, she meets a land, a people and a free-spirited Englishman who change what she thought she wanted. A slow, lyrical, widescreen romance told as memory.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the 1980s prestige literary epic, it kept the Lean-style romance of landscape and history alive in an age of blockbusters, and it was Sydney Pollack's greatest awards success.
Watch with intention
