1984 · Directed by Sergio Leone · 139 min
Sergio Leone's last film follows a group of boys from the Jewish Lower East Side of New York as they grow into Prohibition-era gangsters, then returns to one of them decades later. It is an unhurried, richly designed crime epic that cares more about friendship and time than about action.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late, grand statement of the gangster genre from a director known for Westerns, and a famous case of a film whose reputation depended on which version audiences saw.
Watch with intention
Treat the crime plot as a frame, and watch how the film uses time itself, moving between eras, to build feeling.
