Drama
German (Nirgendwo in Afrika)
2001 · Directed by Caroline Link · 140 min
In 1938 a Jewish family from Germany begins again on a remote farm in Kenya, a place none of them chose and none of them understand. The film follows them across about a decade, told with patience, warmth and a child's eye for detail.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining German film of the early 2000s, it showed that the country's cinema of memory could be warm, widely popular and international rather than only austere or confrontational.
Watch with intention
Watch how each person in the family meets an unfamiliar place: what they bring with them and what they are willing to look at.
