Just after the Second World War, a woman whose father was convicted as a Nazi spy is recruited by an American agent for a dangerous mission in Rio de Janeiro. A love story and a spy thriller share the same few rooms, and the tension comes from what the characters cannot say to each other.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of Hitchcock's Hollywood period and of the postwar spy thriller, where the genre's usual action gives way to psychological pressure and emotional risk.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a love story in which every plot device is really a test of whether two people can trust each other.
