Documentary
Chilean (Nostalgia de la luz)
2010 · Directed by Patricio Guzmán · 93 min
In northern Chile's Atacama Desert, the air is so dry and clear that astronomers build giant telescopes to study the distant past of the universe. The same ground holds other kinds of history. A quiet, meditative essay-documentary links the sky to the earth.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of the post-2000 documentary essay and of Latin American memory cinema. It shows how a filmmaker in exile can return to the trauma of his country through landscape and metaphor.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about time: what it means to look at the past, and who is allowed to dig for it.
