Drama
American
2020 · Directed by Chloé Zhao · 108 min
After the Great Recession erases her town and her livelihood, a woman in her sixties packs her life into a van and takes seasonal jobs across the American West. Part fiction, part portrait of a real community of modern nomads, the film moves quietly, patiently and without lecturing.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 2020s American art cinema, and a recent heir to the tradition of humane, landscape-driven dramas about drifters and the dispossessed, from the Depression era onward.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about a place and a community as much as a character: let the people and landscapes speak before the plot does.
