Bosnian
2001 · Directed by Danis Tanović · 98 min
During the Bosnian War, a Bosnian and a Serb soldier end up in the same trench in the empty ground between the front lines, each armed, neither able to leave. As word spreads, the UN and the press arrive. The film mixes dark comedy with growing suspense.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of post-Yugoslav cinema and one of the most admired anti-war films of the 2000s. It shows how a small, low-budget European production can reach a worldwide audience through a very local conflict.
