West Texas, 1980. A hunter comes across the wreckage of a drug deal and takes a case of money that isn't his. A patient, unnervingly calm killer sets out to retrieve it, while an ageing sheriff tries to stay a step ahead of the damage.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining American film of the 2000s, it fuses the crime thriller with the Western's landscape and moral questions. It also shows how far a rigorously controlled, minimalist style could reach a mainstream audience.
