1935 · Directed by Herbert Smith
A night train carries the post from London to Scotland while the people who sort, load and deliver it go about their work. A short British documentary that treats a routine public service as something worth looking at closely.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the British documentary movement of the 1930s, and an early, influential example of sound used as an expressive design tool in non-fiction film.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about work: how people, machines and timing fit together, and how sound is arranged to make that visible.
