French (Nuit et Brouillard)
1956 · Directed by Alain Resnais · 32 min
Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi camps, a film crew moves slowly through the quiet, overgrown remains of Auschwitz and Majdanek. Colour tracking shots of the present are set against black-and-white archival images of what happened there, under a calm, literate narration.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of postwar European memory and of the essay documentary. It brought the camps into mainstream cinema when many in France and Germany still preferred silence.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an argument about how to look: every cut between colour and black and white asks what remains of the past in the present.
