Drama
American
1976 · Directed by Sidney Lumet · 122 min
At a struggling American television network in the mid-1970s, an ageing news anchor is told his time is up. What follows is a fast, furious satire about ratings, ambition and what happens when news is run like any other show.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of 1970s American cinema, Network turned post-Watergate distrust of institutions into a satire of the media business, and it set the template for later films about television.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a satire that is heightened on purpose: the speeches are meant to be performed, not to sound like ordinary talk.
