Drama
Indian (नीचा नगर)
1946 · Directed by Chetan Anand · 102 min
In a city split between a hilltop of the wealthy and a lower quarter of the poor, a powerful landlord's property ambitions begin to threaten the people below. A stark, politically committed Indian drama made on the eve of independence.
Why it matters in cinema history
A founding work of Indian social-realist cinema, and the film that put Indian filmmaking on the international festival map in the year before independence.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about geography: how the city's physical layout is used to show who holds power.
