2003 · Directed by Clint Eastwood · 138 min
Three boys from a working-class Boston neighbourhood are separated by a single afternoon that none of them ever really leaves behind. Decades later, a murder pulls them back into the same small orbit. A slow, sombre crime drama in which the mystery matters less than the damage around it.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining American crime drama of the early 2000s. It shows the genre turned toward adult, character-driven seriousness, and it marks the point where Eastwood became an Oscar-level director rather than a star who directed.
Watch with intention
Watch it less as a mystery to solve than as a study of how one neighbourhood shapes the people who never leave it.
