Wyatt Earp, a cattle driver heading west with his brothers, takes the job of marshal in the rough frontier town of Tombstone. John Ford turns a famous piece of Western history into a quiet, elegiac story about order, friendship and the price of civilisation.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the classical Western's post-war maturity, it shows the genre turning from adventure towards reflection on law, memory and the cost of settling the frontier.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a Western about the founding of a community, with the gunplay as only one part of that story.
