In 1787 the British ship Bounty sets out on a long voyage to the South Seas under Captain William Bligh, with Fletcher Christian as his senior officer and a young midshipman caught between them. A studio-era sea adventure built around two powerful, opposed men.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining MGM prestige adventure of the mid-1930s, it fixed the sea-voyage drama of command and conscience as a Hollywood genre and has been remade twice.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a duel of two acting styles and two ideas of authority, played out in the confined space of a ship.
