An English family in a comfortable village on the Thames goes about its small domestic business in the summer of 1939: a new hat, a new car, a flower show, a son home from Oxford. The film watches how ordinary life holds together as the war approaches.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of wartime Hollywood, it shows how the studio system's gloss and star power could be turned toward national morale without losing a human scale.
