Longfellow Deeds, a modest tuba-playing greeting-card poet from a small Vermont town, unexpectedly inherits a vast fortune and is pulled into New York. Everyone he meets seems to want something from him. Capra's comedy mixes warmth, wit and a pointed question about money and decency.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of 1930s Hollywood populist comedy, it helped establish the "Capra-esque" style and the idea of a director's name as a selling point.
