Meaning, unpacked
Central idea
The film can be read as a layered allegory about creation, worship and destruction. It uses the structure of a domestic horror story to ask what happens when an artist's need for adoration outweighs care for the one who sustains him, and for the world itself.
Its lasting influence
It helped normalise symbolic, uncomfortable horror in studio releases, and its mix of body horror, domestic dread and allegory can be felt in films such as Hereditary, Titane and The Substance.

Mother burns the house down, killing everyone inside except Him. He takes the glowing crystal from her charred body and sets it back on its pedestal. The house is whole again, and a new woman wakes in the bed.
The last image
A new woman wakes in the restored bed and calls out for him, as the cycle starts over.
What it says
The ending shows that what you watched was one turn of a loop, not a single story. He creates, is worshipped, and consumes what sustains him, then begins again. That is why the film reads as a warning about art, faith and the planet at once.
