A young woman devotes herself to restoring a remote country house with her husband, a poet struggling to write. Their quiet routine is disturbed by a knock at the door. Darren Aronofsky's film plays as domestic suspense that gradually slips out of ordinary reality.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of 2010s art-horror: a studio film that treats genre as a vehicle for allegory, anticipating the wave of 'elevated' horror that followed.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a dream-like puzzle told from one person's perspective, not as a realistic story about a couple.
