Drama
American
2016 · Directed by Barry Jenkins · 112 min
In a poor Miami neighbourhood, a quiet boy grows up trying to work out who he is and how much of himself he can show. The film follows him at three ages, in a hushed, sensuous style built more on looks and silences than on speeches.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining American independent drama of the 2010s: a small, intimate, formally daring film whose Best Picture win moved Black American inner life to the centre of mainstream recognition.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about what goes unsaid: ask what each character is looking at, and what they choose not to say.
