1982 · Directed by Costa-Gavras · 123 min
A buttoned-up American businessman flies to a South American capital in the chaos of a military takeover to find his missing son. With his daughter-in-law as an uneasy ally, he moves from office to office, and from official reassurance to a growing sense that nobody will tell him the truth.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of the post-Watergate political thriller, and a rare case of a major American studio releasing a fierce, fact-based drama about recent events and the conduct of its own government.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about a man's trust in authority: how he speaks to officials, and what he expects them to say back.
