2004 · Directed by Clint Eastwood · 132 min
A veteran boxing trainer, guarded and haunted by a broken family life, reluctantly takes on a determined woman in her thirties who has nothing but a dream of fighting. Set in the worn-out gyms of Los Angeles, it is a spare, quietly humorous drama about work, loyalty and what people owe each other.
Why it matters in cinema history
A Best Picture winner from the last years of mainstream studio-scale classicism, and the film that confirmed Eastwood as one of American cinema's major directors, not only a star turned filmmaker.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about a makeshift family, with boxing as the setting rather than the subject.
