Drama
American
1969 · Directed by John Schlesinger · 113 min
A naive young Texan dresses in cowboy clothes and travels to New York, convinced that rich women will pay for his company. The city is far harsher than the fantasy, and his only ally is a sickly, scheming small-time hustler. A raw, tender character study of two outsiders.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of the New Hollywood moment when the old studio taboos collapsed, it brought sex work, poverty and an unsentimental male friendship into the mainstream and was rewarded by the Academy.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a portrait of loneliness, where every fantasy of success is tested against what the city actually offers.
