South Korean (살인의 추억)
2003 · Directed by Bong Joon Ho · 131 min
In 1986, in a farming district of South Korea, the bodies of young women begin to turn up in the countryside. A local detective who trusts his instincts and a younger investigator from Seoul who trusts evidence are forced to work together. Part procedural, part dark comedy, part portrait of a nation.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of early-2000s South Korean cinema and one of the most influential modern procedurals, it reshaped the serial-killer film by putting institutions, place and fallibility ahead of the brilliant sleuth.
