A father in Madrid is determined to give his seriously ill daughter one last wish: an absurdly expensive dress from her favourite Japanese anime. Cold, patient and darkly funny at first, the film follows small decisions into a very uncomfortable place.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining Spanish art-thriller of the 2010s, it shows how a small, independent production could use noir structure and deliberate restraint to reach festivals and awards worldwide.
Watch with intention
Treat the film as a puzzle of what is left out: watch the gaps between scenes as closely as the scenes.
