In a ruined desert world ruled by a warlord who controls water, a silent drifter is drawn into a desperate escape across the wasteland. Almost the entire film is one long pursuit, told with very little dialogue and a great deal of physical invention.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining twenty-first-century action film. It shows that spectacle on a blockbuster scale can still be built from stunt work, clean geography and visual economy, and it joined a rare group of action films taken seriously at the Oscars.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a silent film with a roaring soundtrack: ask what each image, costume and gesture is telling you without anyone saying it.
