Nelly, a married woman from a comfortable background, meets Loulou, a drifting small-time thief, and chooses to follow him. Maurice Pialat films the affair that follows with rough, unpolished realism, more interested in ordinary days than in romance.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of post-New Wave French realism, it carries the naturalist tradition of Renoir and the 1960s improvisers into a harder, more unsentimental 1980s register.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of how people behave in rooms together, not as a plot that is heading somewhere.
