A Los Angeles saxophonist and his wife begin receiving unmarked videotapes that show their own home. David Lynch's noir plays out as a nightmare, with dread, desire and a rock-and-industrial soundtrack taking the place of a conventional mystery plot.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central film of Lynch's dream-noir phase and one of the boldest art-house thrillers of 1990s American cinema, it pushes genre toward pure atmosphere.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a nightmare with its own emotional logic: ask what each scene feels like before you ask what it means.
