Documentary
British
1942 · Directed by Humphrey Jennings & Stewart McAllister · 20 min
A twenty-minute portrait of Britain at war, told without a single word of explanatory commentary. Factories, fields, concert halls and railway carriages are joined by music and ambient sound into one continuous, quietly emotional piece of cinema.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of the British documentary tradition at its wartime peak, and a landmark of the lyrical, non-narrated essay film that later filmmakers would draw on.
Watch with intention
Treat it as a piece of music in visual form: follow how sound passes from one scene to the next, not just what each scene shows.
