A boy raised among the animals of his father's zoo in India finds himself on a lifeboat in the Pacific, with a Bengal tiger for company. Ang Lee turns Yann Martel's novel into a luminous, painterly survival story that is also about faith and wonder.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of the post-Avatar 3D era and of photoreal digital animals, it extended Ang Lee's long run of films that adapt difficult material in unexpected genres.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film in which the images themselves are a form of wonder, and notice what Lee does with colour, water and light.
