A bat flutters into a medieval castle, and the castle's owner is not what he seems. Over a few minutes, a devilish host conjures one surprise after another for two visitors who have wandered in. It is a short, playful stage-magic spectacle made for fairground and music-hall audiences.
Why it matters in cinema history
A foundational work of fantasy and horror cinema, and an early example of cinema as constructed illusion rather than recorded reality, the line that runs from Méliès through all later special effects.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a magician's act on film, where the real question is how each trick is done and why the camera makes it possible.
