Italian
1960 · Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni · 144 min
A holiday cruise among Italy's volcanic islands is cut short when one member of a wealthy party vanishes. The film follows those left behind across Sicily, in a spare, watchful black-and-white drama about people and the places they move through.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the new European art cinema of around 1960, it shifted Italian filmmaking from the social concerns of neorealism toward the inner lives of the affluent.
Watch with intention
Watch the space around the characters: where they stand in the frame and in the landscape says as much as what they say.
