A young barge captain marries a village girl and takes her to live aboard his boat, the Atalante, on the canals and rivers of France. Crowded in with an eccentric old deckhand and a cabin boy, the newlyweds find that romance and daily life do not fit together easily. Tender, strange and earthy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central film of French poetic realism and a touchstone for the New Wave generation, which saw in Vigo a model of personal, anti-academic filmmaking. Its restored versions show how a studio-mangled work can be recovered.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a love story told through physical things: water, fabric, clutter, skin, and the cramped space of a boat.
