A forged 500-franc note slips into circulation in Paris, passing from one set of hands to the next. When it reaches a man who has no idea what it is, a small act of dishonesty begins to shape lives far beyond the shop where it started. Austere, exact and quietly relentless.
Why it matters in cinema history
A culminating work of French auteur cinema and the clearest late statement of Bresson's pared-down style, in which non-professional actors and rigorous editing replace conventional drama.
Watch with intention
Watch how Bresson replaces expressive acting and music with hands, objects and sound, and ask what that makes you feel instead.
