In present-day Los Angeles, an aspiring actress and a jazz pianist who refuses to compromise keep crossing paths. Told through song, dance and saturated colour, it is a romance about ambition set against the glamour and grind of the city's dream industry.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of the twenty-first-century musical, it showed that a story written directly for the screen, rather than adapted from a stage hit, could succeed with mainstream audiences and awards voters.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a conversation with old Hollywood musicals: how much it borrows and where it deliberately departs from the genre's polish.
