American
1979 · Directed by Robert Benton · 105 min
Ted Kramer is an ambitious New York advertising man who treats his family as something that will wait for him. One evening his wife makes a decision that forces him into a role he has never practised. A quiet, close-grained drama about marriage, work and what it means to look after a child.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining American drama at the turn from the 1970s to the 1980s, it brought the naturalistic, character-driven mood of New Hollywood to a broad family audience and a Best Picture win.
