Drama
German (Die freudlose Gasse)
1925 · Directed by G.W. Pabst · 155 min
Vienna, 1921. In a shabby street where inflation has erased savings and a butcher decides who eats, a former civil servant's family and their neighbours try to survive. Pabst's silent drama follows several lives, mostly women's, through hunger, pride and temptation.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central work of Weimar-era realism and the street-film cycle. It moved German cinema from studio fantasy toward social observation and made Pabst a major director.
Watch with intention
Watch the street itself as the main character: who has power, who queues, and how money changes every relationship.
