Drama
Swiss (Reise der Hoffnung)
1990 · Directed by Xavier Koller · 110 min
A Turkish villager, convinced by rumours of easy prosperity abroad, sells everything his family owns to pay for a passage to Switzerland. Taking his wife and youngest son, he sets out across a continent he does not know. A plain, humane drama about one family's hope.
Why it matters in cinema history
A prominent European film on labour migration and the dangerous routes into Western Europe, made well before the subject dominated headlines, and an unusual international recognition for Swiss cinema.
