Gotham City, early 1980s. Arthur Fleck works as a clown-for-hire, cares for his ailing mother and dreams of a career in stand-up comedy, but the city around him is fraying and so is he. A slow-burning character study dressed as a comic-book origin story.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the comic-book film pushed toward adult, auteur-style drama, and a late echo of New Hollywood's gritty urban portraits in the age of franchise cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of perspective: how much of what you see is Arthur's own view of the world?
