Spanish
1992 · Directed by Bigas Luna · 94 min
In a dusty corner of Spain, a young man from a comfortable family falls for a factory worker, and his mother will do almost anything to stop the match. Bigas Luna tells it as a hot-blooded, deliberately over-the-top comedy of appetite, class and national myth.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key work of post-Franco Spanish cinema's freer, more erotic and self-mocking phase, standing beside Almodóvar's comedies as an export of a newly confident national imagery.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a comedy in which every symbol of Spanishness is pushed so far that it becomes both seductive and ridiculous.
