Jacob Singer, a New York postal worker and Vietnam veteran, drifts through a life that no longer holds together. Ordinary streets, subway platforms and parties begin to carry something wrong in the corners of the frame. It is a psychological horror film about memory, grief and what to trust when your own perception fails.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of early-1990s psychological horror, and a key text in the cycle of films that used hallucination and ambiguous reality to portray trauma, from the Vietnam era onward.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an experience of unreliable perception: ask what the film lets you trust, shot by shot, as much as what it shows.
